By 1980, Americans were ready for new leadership:

–The disaster in Vietnam

– The hostage crisis in Iran

– New tensions with the USSR

This all left many people feeling like the U.S. was losing its power in the world

–Stagflation was growing worse & unemployment remained high

–Johnson & Nixon made many people lose trust in the government, while Ford & Carter provided poor leadership in the 1970s

1980

  • Failed U.S. Rescue Attempt to Save Hostages in Tehran

On April 24, 1980, an ill-fated military operation to rescue the 52 American hostages held in Tehran ends with eight

U.S. servicemen dead and no hostages rescued.

  • Mount St. Helen’s erupts

in March 1980 a 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck underneath Mt. St. Helens.

Again in May a 5.2 earthquake struck again, which caused a bulge of rock and earth to avalanche

Mt. St. Helens is now only 8,363-feet tall, 1,314-feet shorter than it was before the explosion.

In 1974, Hungarian professor Erno Rubik designed a small cube, with moving pieces, to help his students study three-dimensional geometry.

1981

  • Assassination Attempt on the Pope

Pope John Paul II is shot by Turkish gunman Mehmet Ali Agca in Saint Peter’s Square. He is wounded in the abdomen, arm and hand. Two others are wounded as well.

One bullet punctured his lung

He was thrown in the car by an agent- 3 other agents wounded trying to protect the president

Nearly 3,500 people attended personally, 600,000 people lined the streets of London hoping to catch a peek, and approximately 750 million people from around the world watched it on television.

Thriller remains the best-selling album of all time and has sold over 104 million copies to date; 65 million of those copies were within the United States.

  • Vietnam War Memorial Opened in Washington, DC

1983

By the end of the year, approximately three million Cabbage Patch Kids dolls had been “adopted.”

  • Reagan Announces Defense Plan Called Star Wars

A program initiated by Reagan to prevent any missile attacks from other countries, especially the Soviet Union.

Named “Star Wars” because of some crazy ideas about lasers.

1984

PG-13 Movie Rating Created

The initial rating categories were G (appropriate for all ages), M (for mature audiences, but all ages admitted), R (persons under 16 not admitted without an accompanying adult) and X (no one under 17 admitted).

Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), replaced the M catagory to  PG-13 – a category to indicate film content with a “higher level of intensity.”

1985

  • Back to the Future Opens
  • Hole in the Ozone Layer Discovered

Not really a hole but the ozone is thinning- over Antartica

New Coke, a new, sweeter soda formula that was to replace the 99-year-old original Coca Cola. Much to the company’s surprise, people across the United States were outraged when they heard the news.

The switch to New Coke is considered one of the largest marketing blunders in business history.

1986

Space Shuttle Challenger launched from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The Challenger exploded just 73 seconds after take-off. All seven members of the crew died

  • Iran-Contra Scandal Unfolds

President Ronald Reagan‘s administration supplied weapons to Iran¹ — a sworn enemy — in hopes of securing the release of American hostages stemming from the Iran Hostage Crisis

Then the U.S. took millions of dollars from the weapons sale and routed them and guns to the right-wing “Contra”² guerrillas in Nicaragua.

Reagan’s biggest concern was bringing home the 7 Americans in Lebanon

After investigation, the president was found to have been inefficient in controll of the agency that had actually made the illegal deals, and had known about the arms sale to the Iranians. However, it could not be discovered in hearings if the president had known about the Contra support.

  • U.S. Bombs Libya

The United States launched air strikes against Libya in retaliation for the Libyan sponsorship of terrorism against American troops and citizens.

It was over within an hour. Five military targets and “terrorism centers” were hit, including the headquarters of Libyan leader Muammar al-Qaddafi.

1987

  • Montreal Protocol – stop production of CFC’s

Through the Montreal Protocol of 1987, several nations stopped the production of ozone-killing chlorofluorocarbons.

Saving the ozone was literally the first thing the whole world ever agreed on: A treaty banning CFCs was the first agreement ever to be ratified by every country in the United Nations.

  • New York Stock Exchange Suffers Huge Drop on “Black Monday”

The crash began in Hong Kong and spread west to Europe, hitting the United States after other markets had already declined by a significant margin.

1988

Edgar C. Whisenant  was a former NASA engineer and Bible student who predicted the Rapture would occur in 1988

Whisenant was quoted as saying “Only if the Bible is in error am I wrong; and I say that to every preacher in town” and “[I]f there were a king in this country and I could gamble with my life, I would stake my life on Rosh Hashana 88.”

1989

The oil-tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground on Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound (Alaska), spilling 10.8 million gallons of crude oil. The lack of emergency preparedness and the spill’s remote location slowed emergency response to the accident, which gave the oil time to spread out. The Exxon Valdez oil spill ultimately damaged over 1,300 miles of coastline and devastated local wildlife, making it one of the most damaging environmental disasters in history.

  • World Wide Web Invented

Tim Berners-Lee, CERN (ca. 1991)

Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989, about 20 years after the first connection was established over what is today known as the Internet.

Since that time, the Web has changed the world. It is the most powerful communication medium the world has ever known.
